WATCH WAKING with Alexandre Catton: Subcontractors & Suppliers as a Driving Force of Watchmaking
Переглядів 36512 годин тому
In the new episode of Watch Waking, we met with Alexandre Catton, director of the EPHJ Trade Show - The World of High Precision. Together, we discussed those who are not always in the spotlight but without whom there’s a chance your watch wouldn’t be as nice as it is. ⚙️ Subcontractors and suppliers are not always the ones who come to mind when talking about your perfect timepiece. However, the...

For the new episode of WATCH WAKING, we met with Pierre-Yves Donzé, professor of business history at the Gradu...

Amida: The Renaissance of a 70s Icon
Переглядів 4,7 тис.Місяць тому
Born in the 1920s, Amida was a star of the Baselworld 1976 with its digital model, when the watchmaking community was standing at the doorsteps of the quartz crisis. Bold supernatural design, a non-conventional way of showing time with the LED-style display and mechanical movement inside. It was both appealing and innovative. On April 23, 2024, Amida came back with its retro-futuristic style an...

I think the future of hautê horology is “philanthropy…I don’t mean real “build a children’s hospital” philanthropy - I mean “tax-efficient” , morally dubious, venture-capital schemes that are happy to “lose money” (i.e. evade tax) by funding and “patronizing” various maison d’hautê…many luxury goods may face this kind of raiding, and, as Hollywood found with tech-money from Silicon Valley ( much to its regret), it is hard to resist…

I imagine that certain famous "independent" Brands were very uncomfortable having the suppliers in such close proximity, especially if people were looking too closely at the Brands' "in-house" movements...

55K, sold out until 2028. As thin as a Piaget, as twisted as a Cartier Crash. This is pure beauty. Unfortunately, just for the rich.

  • @Nefville

This is like a watch that was made just for me. Its super thin, not traditional at all while being extremely traditional... its like a collection of things that should not work but somehow they do. I can see why he is so successful, this is a real grail piece here. And I have to tell you I really like that he adopted the philosophy of long, _long_ term planning, like Patek or VC would, 50 years down the line, not 3. That is what makes these independents without financial backers able to hang around for 250+ years. His brand is going the distance and longevity is a factor for all mechanical watch enthusiasts - that's important. Keep an eye out for a meteoric rise because this guy has it figured out.

I find it so interesting how the Fibonacci sequence keeps appearing within nature. When I was 17 and studying electronics in my country's navy back in the 80's, I discovered that I could create pseudo random numbers by applying feedback taps on a shift register based ripple counter built with J-K flip-flops. While trying to find the optimum positions for the feedback connections (fed into an XOR gate) to feed back to the first bit, I found that it was actually the Fibonacci sequence which defined the optimum configuration to create one of these pseudo random number generators with maximal output length, before the output would repeat. Many years later, while studying cryptography, I found out that this was something that was already known and used. I was not the first to find this! LOL Fibonacci based LFSR PRNGs are a thing! So it seems that the sequence that Fibonacci discovered, continues to be significant even today within computer engineering and computer science!
